Hy-Vee partners with FoodHealth to boost nutrition transparency

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Hy-Vee is partnering with the FoodHealth Company to introduce the FoodHealth Score, a nutrition-transparency metric, to its customers.

This collaboration aims to enhance the grocery shopping experience by providing a clear, 1-100 score for the nutritional value of foods.

The FoodHealth Score lets shoppers compare nutrient density and ingredient quality of various products, helping them make healthier choices. This scoring system is available online and via the Hy-Vee mobile app.

Samantha Citro Alexander, FoodHealth Company’s CEO, emphasized the importance of the grocery store as a healthcare environment. “With this launch, shoppers can feel confident that Hy-Vee is truly a partner in their health,” Alexander said.

Hy-Vee customers will also receive FoodHealth Score Insights, offering explanations for scores and suggesting healthier alternatives. Aaron Wiese, Hy-Vee’s president, said this tool supports their “food is medicine” approach, complementing existing dietitian and pharmacy services.

This initiative aligns with growing trends toward food transparency and accountability. According to the FoodHealth Company and NielsenIQ, 75% of shoppers say transparency influences their trust in grocery brands, while 60% of grocery spending is on foods recommended for only occasional consumption.
