Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is an essential nutrient that plays a crucial role in maintaining overall health. Here are some of the key benefits associated with vitamin C:

Immune system support: Vitamin C is well-known for its role in supporting the immune system. It helps stimulate the production and function of various immune cells, such as white blood cells, that protect the body against pathogens and infections. It also acts as an antioxidant, neutralizing harmful free radicals that can damage cells and weaken the immune system.

Collagen synthesis: Collagen is a protein that provides structure and strength to various tissues in the body, including the skin, bones, tendons, and blood vessels. Vitamin C is necessary for the synthesis of collagen, which helps maintain healthy skin, promotes wound healing, and supports the health of connective tissues.

Antioxidant activity: Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that helps protect cells from oxidative stress caused by free radicals. This antioxidant activity helps reduce the risk of chronic diseases, such as heart disease and certain types of cancer. It also helps regenerate other antioxidants, such as vitamin E, enhancing their effectiveness.

Iron absorption: Vitamin C enhances the absorption of non-heme iron, the form of iron found in plant-based foods and iron supplements. By consuming vitamin C-rich foods or supplements along with iron sources, such as leafy greens or legumes, you can increase iron absorption and help prevent iron deficiency anemia.

Eye health: Vitamin C may contribute to maintaining healthy eyes. It has antioxidant properties that help protect the eyes from oxidative damage caused by exposure to sunlight and aging. Vitamin C has been associated with a reduced risk of developing cataracts and age-related macular degeneration, two common eye conditions.

Cardiovascular health: Some studies suggest that vitamin C may have a positive impact on cardiovascular health. It may help lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation, improve blood vessel function, and enhance the health of the endothelium, the inner lining of blood vessels.

Lemon juice is great to add to your water
as it only contains four calories, one gram of sugar per tablespoon. It’s a great source of vitamin C. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps protect your cells
against the effects of free radicals. Free radicals are molecules produced
when your body breaks down food or is exposed to tobacco, smoke and radiation
from the sun x rays or other sources. Free radicals might play a role in heart
disease, cancer and other diseases. Vitamin C also has immune system
benefits, helps prevent chronic disease, helps decrease high blood pressure,
heart disease and uric acid levels. And that is effective in battling gout. Vitamin C also helps
prevent iron deficiency through studies that also show that vitamin C helps
in preventing dementia. The safe upper limit for vitamin
C is 2000 milligrams a day and there’s a great track record with strong evidence
that taking 500 milligrams daily is safe. 75 to 90 milligrams
per day is recommended. Don’t go over 2000.
