DEPENDING ON YOUR goals, there are several ways to structure a workout. There are workouts designed to maximize aesthetic qualities. There are workouts meant to build strength in a particular muscle group. Then there’s what the U.S. Coast Guard focuses on: How to keep calm—and still perform—during chaotic situations when lives are on the line.
The mental training played a major role in the rescue of 184 lives at Camp Mystic during the Texas floods last summer. Ben Court, MH’s executive editor, spent time in Corpus Christi to talk with the rescue team and observe the Coast Guard’s training. He shared what he learned in the latest Strong Talk with exercise physiologist and strength coach Dr. Pat Davidson and MH fitness director Ebenezer Samuel, C.S.C.S. The episode also delves into details on the Camp Mystic rescue operation, the benefits of group exercise, and how everyday gym goers can add mental preparation to their physical training.
