NATSINPAS 2023 and 2012-13 Microdata Release by ABS | Nutrition & Physical Activity Survey - News and Statistics

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has released details on the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey.

According to the ABS source, the survey, known as NATSINPAS, collects information on nutrition, physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep. Data can be cross-classified by demographic and socioeconomic characteristics.

The current release provides information on microdata from two survey cycles: 2023 and 2012-13. It includes data file details, data item lists, methodology information, and a link to the previous survey’s microdata.

The 2023 survey is broadly comparable to the 2012-13 cycle, though content has changed due to updates in nutrition and physical activity guidelines, demographic standards, and user needs. Major changes include a new dietary recall tool and the use of an accelerometer instead of a pedometer for directly measured physical activity, inactivity and sleep data.

Two levels of microdata are available. Basic microdata allows approved users to download and analyse unit record data in their own environment. This is currently available for the 2012-13 survey; the 2023 basic microdata is scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2026. Detailed microdata is accessible via the DataLab for approved users, offering in-depth analysis using statistical software. This product is available for both the 2012-13 and 2023 surveys.

TableBuilder, an online tool for creating tables and graphs, provides access only to the 2012-13 NATSINPAS data.

The datasets are hierarchical. Most data are stored as individual characteristics on person records, with estimates also available at the household level. Data items and output categories are described in Excel spreadsheets in the Data downloads section.

The 2023 NATSINPAS includes two weight variables: a household weight benchmarked to households, and a person weight benchmarked to the total population aged two years and over. The 2012-13 survey includes a person weight benchmarked to the population aged two years and over, and a biomedical weight for participants aged five years and over. No weights are associated with other levels due to repeated records.

Data items for the 2023 survey include demographics, household details, employment, education, long-term health conditions, risk factors such as tobacco smoking, specific dietary information, and physical measures such as blood pressure, height, weight and waist.

Accelerometer data is output at multiple levels of detail, including 100Hz input files, 5-second summaries, quarter-hour summaries, day-level data, and sleep-level data. The most detailed 100Hz level matches the device measurement rate of 100 readings per second. Example files for these levels are available in the Data downloads section.

For people living in remote areas, publication estimates used the first four days of data, requiring at least 48 hours of wear time. For non-remote areas, estimates included all persons with at least 48 hours of wear time. Sleep estimates required additional wear-time criteria.

The survey employed a Group Jackknife Replication method for variance estimation. The household and person weights each have 250 replicate groups. Users must apply weights to produce population estimates and calculate measures of sampling error such as standard error, relative standard error and margin of error.
