MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – On this edition of Wellness Wednesday, Upper Michigan Today talked building a practical health foundation.
What’s the first step in a healthy lifestyle? Well, between movement, exercise, rest and seemingly endless branches of health to improve… sleep may just be it.
Audrey Stetson and John Redfield previewed the segments to come below with a “True or False” game on sleep and oxygen, two of life’s greatest necessities and topics of the day’s show.
Dr. Paul Jacobs joined Audrey and John just two weeks after his appointment as the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine’s new president. The Iron Mountain native has spent 25 years as dental director for Upper Peninsula Sleep Dentistry in Escanaba.
With a focus on obstructive sleep apnea, Dr. Jacobs also runs RestUp Sleep Solutions there. He says with this condition, one’s airway closes down, so not enough air gets through. You can learn more sleep apnea basics from Dr. Jacobs’ first UMT appearance here.
Upon his second visit to the studio, Dr. Jacobs raised awareness for sleep apnea’s impacts on health, including information on correlation between sleep apnea and strokes. May is Stroke Awareness Month.
Below, Dr. Jacobs teaches the people of Upper Michigan about the latest technological advancements in obstructive sleep apnea detection. He also touched on at-home testing possibilities.
Dr. Jacobs also noted the importance of collaboration between physicians and dentists when it comes to sleep apnea treatments. He lists potential treatments below.

In another side of health, UP Health System Registered Nurse Kristina Alvarado and Nurse Practitioner Dr. Natalie Pianetto talked with UMT about wound care. They expanded upon figuring out when to seek medical attention vs. sticking to home care.
Have you heard of hyperbaric oxygen treatment? Allow these UPHS representatives to explain its benefits on health and who it’s best intended for.
In closing, TV6 Morning News Anchor Mandy Koskela shared with Audrey and John her experience as a reporter on one of last year’s Upper Peninsula Honor Flights out of Escanaba to Washington, D.C.
Honor Flight Mission XXVIII is expected to return to Escanaba at 9:00 p.m. May 20. Doors to the Van Rooy hangar open starting at 7:00 p.m. for all who wish to welcome our veterans home.
