NOTES:

New Study: July 15th, 2020

โ€œ the active form of vitamin D, exerts immunologic activities on multiple components of the innate and adaptive immune system as well as endothelial membrane stabilityโ€

โ€œAssociation between low levels of vitamin D and increased risk of developing several immune-related diseases and disorders, including psoriasis, type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, tuberculosis, sepsis, respiratory infection, and COVID-19, has been observedโ€

What we know about Vit D and the immune system:

Last Week Study -365,000 patients over a 10year
-reduction in all cause mortality
-higher levels less mortality due to CVD & Cancer

New study:
-anti-viral against respiratory viruses
-stabilizes the destruction of endothelial tissues and protective against vascular function
-stimulates the adaptive immune system- T & B lymphocytes (memory system)
-stimulates natural killer function

Seasonal outbreak?
2 fold reduction in risk of developing respiratory disease
-because of higher vit D levels in summer months

What should your levels be?

historical evidence suggests that our hunter gatherer forefathers maintained their circulating vitamin D levels in the range of 10โ€“50 ng/mL (25โ€“125 nmol/L).

Indigenous populations such as Maasai herders and Hadza tribesmen were found to have serum 25(OH)D levels in the range of 40โ€“60 ng/mL (100โ€“150 nmol/L)

These levels are consistent with those reported in population studies to be associated with the lowest risk of several types of cancers, cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases, and all-cause mortality

Ideal 40-60 ng/ml
Supplementation can help

What blocks you from getting enough Vit D?

Getting Vit D & Absorbing Vit D are different
1. sunscreen -blocks UVB light
2. gut dysbiosis
3. air pollution -carbon particles in air absorb UVB rays
4. Obesity -Vit D is easily absorbed in fat tissues and not easily released
5. temperature of your skin -warmer skin is a better producer of Vit D
6. darker skin- melanin doesnโ€™t absorb UVB

THESE VARIABLES MAY REQUIRE YOU TO TAKE HIGHER DOSES
