When building my skincare routine, sunscreen is a non-negotiable, but layering it under makeup can cause pilling and flaking. Sunscreen sometimes emphasizes my acne, large pores, or skin texture. Plus, they’re not exactly shade-inclusive for deeper skin tones like mine. However, that’s where SPF makeup products comes into play. These lip balms, powders, and foundations provide an extra layer of protection and enhance my skin’s overall appearance.

Using SPF makeup helps reinforce our defense against UV rays, says dermatologist Noah Gratch, MD. While these products don’t provide all-day sun protection, they do offer an extra layer of defense against UV rays. Using SPF makeup also encourages consistent use, as we need to reapply it at least every two hours. I like to wear mine while enjoying al fresco dining, park hangs, running errands, or any day I want extra sun coverage. Just remember that SPF makeup alone should not replace face sunscreen because the cosmetics don’t provide enough coverage on its own, he says.

What to Consider
Before adding any SPF makeup to your routine, there’s a few key factors to keep in mind, including sunscreen filters, skincare ingredients that fade hyperpigmentation and lock in hydration, and SPF levels.
Active Ingredients
SPF makeup is made with either mineral or chemical active ingredients.
Mineral Sunscreen
Mineral sunscreen contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These ingredients create a physical barrier that reflects and scatters UV rays away from the skin’s surface, says dermatologist Divya Shokeen, MD.
They provide immediate broad-spectrum coverage and won’t irritate sensitive and acne-prone skin. The trade-off? They can leave behind a cast on darker skin tones, but the color pigments in makeup help prevent this.
Chemical Sunscreen
Chemical sunscreen uses avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate, and octocrylene as active ingredients for sun protection. These filters absorb solar rays and deflect their damaging effects by converting them into heat, says Dr. Shokeen. They’re less likely to leave behind an ashy finish, but they require a 15- to 20-minute waiting period before sun exposure.

Still, reapplication is the key to ensure your skin remains protected outdoors, says fellow dermatologist Brendan Camp, MD. How We Chose
After chatting with the medical experts, I started with a testing pool of 16 SPF makeup products in 2025. Over three months of daily testing, I gradually narrowed down the options until I settled on the six featured picks. Since reapplication is key, I paid close attention to how easily I can layer my makeup throughout the day without looking cakey. Were the powders chalky or left behind an ashy finish? Did creams cause streaking or pilling? And did the liquids feel like a heavy cosmetic mask on my face, or were they so weightless that I forgot I was even wearing them?
